Herald Tribune Gets It Right
The Herald Tribune is one of the newspapers large enough to have its Opinion/Editorial department separate from its news department. The Opinion staff review issues, does the necessary research and then writes the editorials.
After a week of error-filled stories on the newspages, it is refreshing to read a sensible report on the airport process. Thanks to the paper for its policy and thanks to the the Opinion Editor and colleagues for their objectivity.

Election Day, Tuesday, May 6.
I have been asked about the two issues on the ballot, Tuesday. I find them of interest as a citizen of Sarasota County and Venice.
The first deals with land use outside the County's "urban service boundary"--for the most part I-75. A coalition of citizens, developers, etc. have crafted this compromise amendment which, essentially, calls for a unanimous county commission vote to make changes in land use toward more density east of the urban density area.

Another Florida City With A Controlled Growth Success Story
In response to the article on Stuart, Florida posted on this site a reader/journalist sent me some information on another Florida city determined to control growth.
In February, 2008 reporter Kristen Reed of the Orlando Sentinel wrote about Lake Helen, Florida which, she said is, "Known for its Victorian homes and quaint atmosphere, this city of 2,800 is doing what many others won't or can't -- staying small." >

The city is limiting development and its population.

Stuart, Florida--Lauded for its characteristics--very much what we must save in Venice.
Most people reading this site do not need to learn the lesson that Stuart, Florida, provides for Venice--they already expressed that view. But there are some readers, or perhaps friends of readers that might like to see a successful model like that City Council is projecting for Venice.
In "HAVENS," a feature of the New York Times, Charles Passy writes on Stuart. His article is headlined, "A Town Loved for What It Is---and Isn't."
"When local residents talk about the lure of

Government Officials Working Too Much!
Mayor Had Contact With Guiness
There is a new first--people are complaining about government officials working too much! It is unprecedented!
Of course the people complaining are some people, including a few government officials and land use attorneys, that are not used to having much discussion about issues important to the people and council members asking questions.
Actually the facts are not as impressive as some of the discussion. Only a few me

Comp Plan Offers Opportunity for Growth, Mix of Housing and Commercial Use. Misinformation addressed
The council finished its careful review of 26 areas of the city, ranging from the central historical district to undeveloped lands east of I -75. A summary of a group of the actions taken compared with the earlier plan was discussed in a public meeting Thursday evening at 5 p.m.
I learned last week that some people had been painting Venice and its government as "no growth" and that word had spread outside the city. The source was from a development interested source which was co

Mayor Replies to Gondolier Column
Note: this letter to the editor, sent from the city's email, is public at the time it is sent. Although I would prefer for the editor to receive it before including it on this site, it is available to all the media having electronic access to city information.
In his March 30, 2008 column, publisher Bob Vedder makes some good points, but he also includes some misinterpretations and misstatements. I appreciate the chance to add my views, as I was not contacted before my vi

MAYOR'S JOURNAL--RURAL AREAS IN VENICE? WHAT'S HAPPENING WITH THE AIRPORT?
Mayor's Journal. This is one in an occasional series of articles attempting to share some light on council activities from my personal perspective. It does not represent other members' views or those of staff.
Interesting Direction on Revising Comprehensive Plan- Rural Areas.
Regular readers know that Venice, like other municipalities and counties, has to send the state a new comprehensive plan, which essentially reflects the plans for land use and related topics

Control Towers in Limited Supply?
Airports and Control Towers
The issue of whether Venice should ask for a control tower in its requests to the FAA for the future has drawn considerable dialogue among pilots and between pilots and citizens. The issue is whether a control tower would bring additional safety and is necessary for VNC or whether a control tower will attract more commercial and charter aviation and increase the traffic at VNC. A number of pilots do not think a control tower is desirable, others do.
