December 31 2006 From Ed Martin
The usual year end column is the best and worst ten things, or my resolutions for New Year. If you are as tired of that as I am, I will spare you. I would like to mention two things I have not seen written about. The entry to Venice from the north bridge, permanently marred by the Miller Towers, has definitely been improved by the mini-park next to the Venice Little Theatre. The mural project by B.J. Carson, shepherded by Jean Trammel in her "public art" post, is attractive, and the landscaping is a very welcome softening of the entry way. Native plants have been used and the project supported by the Sarasota Conservation Foundation and Venice City. Thanks to all. Trammel also deserves a kudo for the fence and plantings she has used to "buffer" the properties at the north and south of Venice Avenue on Business 41. Each creates a more natural and attractive look to the roadway at the city's main corner. Competition With Bob Vedder In Key West during a Christmas cruise I spotted an historical plaque attached to a building that read, " On December 3, 1893 absolutely nothing happened here." Happy New Year. My great challenge will be to remember to write 2007 on my checks.
