Vermont Community Wrestles With Growth--"yes Virginia, the experience of others may be useful."
Venice faces different issues than this Vermont community, but I think you will find this of interest. I value the planning experience of other communities, recently started reviewing the Comprehensive Plan of Mt. Dora, Florida. Recent appointees to the Planning Commission have had planning commission experience in Venice or in other communities.

Very noble article. Mayor Ed, I must say that hidden in the closets of city hall is a big study work effort call "Envision Venice". Lots of us spent a whole lot of time for nothing as the contrived results by the last administration was the catalyst for the current administration's election to office. Get it out, dust it off and all the citizens raw input is in your hands. Follow their wishes and the council's re-election will be assured. But please! No More Studies! Action is what is required. I had very similar thoughts when I read this same article. While there are many dissimilarities in the smaller Vermont hamlet and Venice, the idea of utilizing educational institutions in the furtherance of some of local governments needs and goals is something I have thought about for a long time. Locally, Jono Miller did a research paper on the history of North Port from earliest times through GDC and platted lots to current day. I believe it was part of his thesis for a graduate degree at New College. Reading it is helpful in understanding the unique issues that beset these "platted lot" municipalities and could help other officials understand their particular hurdles where further development is concerned. I have long been a proponent of municipalities using the talent and brain power of local students (high school as well as collegiate) and many of our extremely gifted and experienced retirees. How much more meaningful it would be for an environmental science student to be assigned to do some actual water quality testing (for city, county, SWFMD) as part of their classwork. There must be literally hundreds of opportunities for inter-institutional cooperation of this kind. I think we should keep absolutely open minds and look at ideas from whatever sources are available, be they other communities in other states or whatever.

Well, "yes": This reappeared in the Herald Tribune today. Kit McKeon was on a neighboring planning commission in VT, and may have some special insights from the ground. With two Middlebury College alumni/ae childrend, the Bennetts have a special interest in this area and this program. Although it might seem that it doesn't apply to Venice, it does have some impact for that part of the City East of I-75 where, despite a lot of attempts, not much has really happened after the Venetian Golf and River Club was developed. I think it would be a good idea to get plugged into this Middlbury program, and would be happy to see what we can develop with our contacts there.
