Waiting By The Mailbox-- The “Something Blue” Was Me.
It did not come. I chatted for a few moments with “Happy,” our effective Mail Person, who is, happily, recovered and back to work, after Rotator Cuff surgery, (who knew it wasn’t just a baseball injury?) He did not mention the non-appearing mail item.

I did get my new Japanese notebook, (Toshiba Mini), made in China, but purchased from a U.S. retailer in Edison, New Jersey and delivered by Fed Ex, (I had no choice Happy), so it wasn’t a total loss to the U.S economy.

It is true I did not know Chelsea and Marc, but Bill sat in with my son, Bruce’s band on Martha’s Vineyard while he was President, (he was better than the guys expected) and Bruce chatted with Hillary in the kitchen. Later that week I met Hillary in a receiving line, (hers not mine), and she recalled Bruce and told me what a nice young man he was. If I had lived in New York, she would have had my vote for Senate.

So was it too much to expect an invitation after such close family ties? Well, I still have other memories, John Brademas, the Majority Whip in the House, a Rhodes Scholar, invited us to his wedding—we were in France, regrettably and we attended Martin Gerry’s wedding and he was Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights in the Nixon era. It was at the historic Custis Lee Mansion in Mount Vernon, Virginia. George Will was there, and I tried to talk about the Cubs with him, he was a big Cubs fan supposedly, but Assistant Secretaries of Education were below his visibility level—although later, his then wife, Madeline, followed me as Assistant Secretary for Special Education and Rehabilitative Services, so there too! Tricia Nixon and I did a public service announcement about children with disabilities—she was on camera, I was the producer for the government.

Well, it shouldn’t be too long before Malia gets married, and maybe Peggy and I will still be around.

i am somewhat shocked by your assuming Malia will get married before 'too long.' it has been a long time since most young women were expected to marry right out of high school or college. and many women no longer see marriage as a wise first choice at a young age.

i, of course, was expected to marry young and marry well - no 'out of the norm' types were acceptable. i chose not to do so - disappointing to my parents but a wise choice for me.

i greatly regret your decision not to appear on the ballot in November. i doubt there is another person in Venice with your virtues.

best wishes - naomi voit
