Mayoral Privileges
There are few things that could be considered a privilege at 7:30 a.m. on a Monday morning, but last Monday I greeted the children at Epiphany Cathedral School, their principal and teachers and many parents.
It was my pleasure to read a proclamation honoring this school for being selected a Blue Ribbon Winning school, the only Catholic school in Sarasota County to be so honored. The proclamation also named this week Catholic Education Week in Venice.

Those who know Guiliani best....
This column infrequently endorses candidates, but as a native New Yorker, familiar with such Guiliani antics as trying to cut off funding for the Brooklyn Museum of Art because he did not like an exhibit and ordering the busses to remove ads poking fun at him, (a judge reminded him of the law each time), I thought I would share the NY Times editorial which includes their view of him while endorsing John McCain.
My own choices remain a national security secret, but I like Bill Richardson for

Florida Mayors Oppose Tax Referendum, Jan 29
The proposed constitutional amendment will simply keep an inequitable system, making it worse. Most jurisdictions will have to cut services or increase fees. That has already begun.

"I go to Venice instead." (of downtown Sarasota.)
The writer of this letter, Jo Legg of Sarasota, writes about resitance from that city's downtown merchants to green spaces and amenities.
Her letter reinforces the point I have emphasized that Venice is a "brand" to be protected. She says, in part, "I go to Venice instead. It has plants, benches and no tall buildings."

Two days in "Paradise"--Arts Version
What is your arts preference, figure paintings at the Venice Art Center, a lecture on Cole Porter's sophisticated lyrics at the Venice Library, or a "Variations" concert by a virtuoso pianist.
Yesterday afternoon, in a benefit for the Venice Opera Guild, world-renowned musician Dick Hyman gave an exceptional perfomance. It was Hyman's fourth concert on behalf of the Guild and was, in part, a tribute to the late Ilse Kern, former president of the Opera Guild and a leader in the broa

Bob Vedder's Column on Fees Is On Target
Bob Vedder correctly raises the issue of whether it is in the public interest to increase fees dramatically for park and special event uses. (click on link below.)
This item on the council agenda was originally scheduled for discussion and decision last Tuesday. Working with the agenda committee I suggested a day for discussion with a vote at a separate meeting.
Citizen input at the meeting gave rise to new information, various council responses, staff input and a deci

Tra Ponti Approval Opens New Era in Venice Government
The City Council approved developer Mike Miller's Tra Ponti project on a unanimous vote January 8. The project, originally proposed to include four 80 foot towers and a fifth 65 foot building was approved by the previous city council on the first of two necessary "readings," after reducing two of the buildings by ten feet.
The public during the election campaign repeatedly expressed dissatisfaction with the high buildings which would loom over the E.Venice Avenue bridge between Tamp
