InsideVenice May Protect Sources Under Proposed Federal Shield Law.
The Obama Administration and Senate leadership have agree on the essentials of a new shield law--that is allowing journalists to protect sources without going to jail for it.
The proposed law would allow judges more discretion in these disputes.

"Protection...would also be extended to upaid bloggers engaged in gathering and disseminating news."--NY Times, 10/31/2009

ICLEI is not something my wife says about raw oysters.
Ed,

I heard mention that Venice may have joined an organization called ICLEI. I looked at their website and it appears that the goal as a member is to make the city more environmentally friendly and, at the same time, to decrease operating costs. Could you advise if that's correct and to what extent, if at all, they have a say in decision-making. Was there a fee to join and, if so, what does the fee pay for besides membership?

It also appears that Sarasota Coun

Venice City Council Races--“InsideVenice” Preferences

First, there is no prohibition barring an elected official from endorsing candidates as an individual. Indeed at least two elected officials have endorsed a city council candidate this season. What would be improper is to do so officially, using public funds, etc. Senator Detert and State Representative Holder have been pictured and identified by title in campaign advertisements.

I learned today from the Herald Tribune editorial staff that they do not plan an endorsement

Last year I closed down the email, ed@inside, etc. because it was drawing 50-100 spams a day.

Available now, you can comment on an article by clicking on the comment button at the end of the full story.

However, if you would like to make a general comment, ask a question, etc., not necessarily on an article. You can contact me at insidevenice@verizon.net. I hope this will make your views more available to the public. Thanks. Ed

Restaurant News--Best Bites Revisited and A New Recommendation
David Arbuckle, the chef/proprieter (with Rofi, his wife), of the Curry Creek Cafe in Nokomis on 41 and I have had a running gag, where he asks me when I am going to announce at City Council meeting that everyone should eat at the Curry Creek Cafe.

I have generally replied in kind, e.g. "When Nokomis annexes into Venice" or "Why would you want to hurt your business?" The truth is that everyone who likes good food and a pleasant setting, at appropriate prices, would enjoy the Curr

Reply to Thoughtful Citizen Raising Questions About Airport/Legal Costs
I received an inquiry from a citizen/physician about the airport and legal costs on the City Server. Although the correspondence, including his emails to me are public, I have not included them here, as I have not asked for his consent.
If he wishes, I will add them later.

Dear Dr. Phifer,

Thanks for writing. I will try to supply a little information that may be useful..

JAZZ

The Jazz Club of Sarasota presents a series of concerts on Friday's at 2p.m. at the Bayfront Center, ($10.00 or $5.00 for members). It is a nice venue, small enough to be intimate which suits jazz better than large auditoriums and the groups are very fine professionals.
Friday afternoon, Kitt Moran, who is, I feel, the area's best jazz singer, (and "cabaret" too.) presented a wonderful performance. Kitt chose to have her first set feature women composers and lyri

An "Inside" Perception of Today's City Council Meeting
A full day of action was demonstrated at Council Meeting, October 13, 2009

Among the highlights:

1. Council reaffirmed its support for non-profit organizations hosting festivals, parades, art fairs, and the Circus Cirquesa.
Shortly after the November 2007 election Council overturned a previous policy which was to begin charging fees for the police, fire and other city services needed to hold these events. Following that policy, the 2008 Sun Fiesta, (this wee

Cheering When U.S. Is Not Chosen for Olympics, Disappointment When Our President Wins Nobel?
As the saying goes--"What's wrong with this picture?" --Americans negative on their own country? I don't think that is what most "real" Americans feel.

For more than four decades Peggy and I have traveled on pleasure and business to many countries. We have been blessed with this opportunity and the chances to learn a bit more about other people and nations.

In those years we have witnessed, many times, admiration for and positive attitudes toward, the United State

Candidates on "Neutral Turf"--Don't Miss It.
The four candidates for City Council will have the opportunity to be heard in a forum sponsored by the League of Women Voters Monday, October 12 at the Venice Library, at 6 p.m.

While there are a number of forums available, most have been "tainted" in my opinion, by the political slant of the sponsoring organizations leading to some hostile questions, uneven applause, etc.

For that reason I encouraged, through a member, the League of Women Voters, which has

Coast Guard Ship, "Crocodile" Visits Venice--Navy League.
I had the pleasure of welcoming the Crocodile to Venice for a celebration of its adoption by the Navy League. A number of Coast Guard personnel and Navy personnel, past and present were in attendance, along with family and friends, for ceremonies and a nice lunch at the Crow's Nest.

Some shots of the gathering and the arrival are on Utube. We look forward to Captain Smith and his 12 man crew returning to Venice to fuel up and have some brief R&R. At 6'7" you will recognize the C

Citizen Input on Jail Complex Need and Siting
The Convocation of Governments in Sarasota County met Tuesday and among the numerous topics for discussion is the County's planning process for new Justice facilities.

A letter from L.Cisco, a resident of Venice to Marshall Happer, also a citizen who is playing a significant role in this development was of sufficient interest that I asked for permission to publish it here. At the end you will find another brief letter from the sender suggesting actions the City might take.
