The First Steps
On The Campaign Trail.

When Peggy and I walked into the post-election party at about 7:45 a great cheer went up. Our reaction was the same—caution-mixed with excitement--we did not want a premature celebration. With eight of eleven precincts reported, Ernie Zavodnyik, Sue Lang and I had a considerable lead—one our friends/volunteers thought was insurmountable.

While exchanging hugs, hand-shakes, an occasional “high or low five” we kept trying to find out which pre

First Workshop on Comprehensive Plan Attracts Many Citizens.
Note: the following is not an official city document, nor does it reflect the views of the City or the council. It is a limited report based on this writer's impression of the events.

The Workshop

The city council held its first planning workshop on the Comprehensive Plan. The city staff, indicating it had responded to public interest in discussing the plan in detail, provided an overview of the process and raised the idea of a 90 day extension to allow additional

Mayor-Elect Hits the Road to Planning Workshop Hours After the Election Party.
On the morning after the election the "first lady" and I found ourselves on the road to Miami to attend a workshop on "New Urbanism" by Andres Duany and his colleagues. Fortunately, the victory party the night before while super-joyous, was not overdone and so we were ready, if a bit tired.

The City had reserved several places for the incumbents and with the changes, City Manager Marty Black and City Clerk, Lori Stelzer felt it would be appropriate for Sue Lang and for me to fill th

Lang, Zavodnyik and Martin win "Landslide" Victory in Venice City Council, Mayoral Election
In a stunning upset, Sue Lang, Ernie Zavodnyik and Ed Martin replaced Venice city council members, Jim Woods, Bill Willson and Mayor Fred Hammett. Unofficial totals showed the challengers with about 65 percent or more of the vote, demonstrating a wide appeal across all areas of the city and the entire political spectrum.

The challengers all thanked the hundreds of volunteers who had provided support in phoning and canvassing voters, organizing "Meet and Greets" and praised the e

Sunday Jazz in Venice, A New and Pleasing Opportunity
Sunday afternoon's jazz concert at the Harmony House, Holiday Inn in Venice, was the perfect cure for me from the hectic campaign.

Jack Fanning, on vibes, led a highly professional group including Dave Trefethen on guitar, Dominic Mancini on bass and Dane Hassan on drums, in a wonderfully relaxing, swinging performance.

Fanning called a variety of songs from different eras, ranging from "Rose Room" which goes back to the Ziegfield Follies, and Sigmund Romberg's collabora

Former Planning Commissioner Greg Shanika Takes a Careful Look at Comprehensive Plan, Part 2 of 3.
The proposed comprehensive plan will change Venice's future. The issue is important enough so that I hope every citizen concerned about maintaining the quality of life and spirit of Venice will study this issue carefully. Shanika's articles, the commentary of Bob Vedder, also posted and early commentary by this site should set the stage for intensive citizen involvement in considering this plan.

Gondolier-Sun Publisher Bob Vedder Sheds Light on Height, Density in Proposed Comprehensive Plan
In his November 4, 2007 column, Gondolier Publisher Bob Vedder points out that the proposed villages will encourage height and density increases, the opposite of what the citizens said they wanted in the Envision Venice process. Vedder also suggests the issues may play a part in Tuesday's election.
