The Vedder Chronicles: Strike Three and We Are Out.
Bob,
As you should know, you cannot send emails to the City server or to me about City business on a confidential basis, nor can I to you. Why would you want to carry on a confidential conversation when you write publicly about your feelings about me and others in City government in your column?
I have been writing you only on the public city server since the City email policy went into effect if it, conceivably, had anything to do with City business,- perhaps you remem

Rick Magee Has Taken The Time to Respond to the Fringe Element on ICLIE. Click Guest Blog on right
This tale, out of the McCarthy era politics, seems to believe that Venice is in danger of being taken over by a United Nations group aiming at taking over private property in the name of environmentalism. As you can see, other cities in the US plus Sarasota County are also following recommendations that will lead to doom, (perhaps.)
For unfathomable reasons some public press is taking this nonsense seriously enough to print reports.

Rick Magee provides facts to combat fantasy on ICLIE
GUEST COLUMN – by Rick Magee
Why Venice is a member of ICLEI (International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives)
A recent front-page article in the Gondolier Sun reported on three citizens who had submitted a petition with 79 names protesting Venice’s membership in a “United Nations-sponsored planning organization” that promotes sustainable development. The citizens, none of whom live in the City of Venice, were concerned that membership in ICLEI would eventually lead to the

VEDDER DIALOGUE--PART II
editor's note. This is my answer to Bob Vedder's message of disappointment in my service as Mayor.
December 27, 2009
Dear Bob Vedder,
I very much appreciate the honesty of your reply. I believe it rings with truth, much more so than the inaccurate charges that you have written, which I now see have been a kind of "flailing about" in frustration. To steal a phrase, "things are not as good as they seem in good times or as bad as they seem in poor ones."

PART I--DIALOGUE WITH BOB VEDDER
editor's note: Over the years Bob Vedder and I have sometimes agreed, more recently disagreed. We keep communicating-or perhaps trying. His reply, below, is in response to an email from me that follows. All is on the City email server and so not private.
Ed,
I have to say Ed that in all my years of working at the paper I have not
been as disappointed in one person we recommended than you. I was so high
on the future of the city. The talks wi

Height Limits, Open Space, Why Boulder is Flourishing--Venice Will do the Same.
"Controlled urban growth is serious business in this city of just over 100,000. You won’t find housing developments creeping up the hillsides. And thanks to four-story height restrictions, you won’t find towers competing with the peaks. Even from downtown you can look out on the tens of thousands of acres of open space, conservation easements and nature preserves that surround the city. "

Read the comments on this Sarasota Herald Tribune article on Osprey hotel
"People don't care about growth anymore...." That is not what I hear. Talking to dozens of citizens and visitors, they say the Council has the right idea about Venice. "More height, density, mixed new architectural styles...why on earth would anyone want to do that to this lovely town. Its why we come here."

BLALOCK PARK HOLIDAY LIGHTS--NOT TO BE MISSED!
The Arboretum at Blalock Park is a marvelous asset to the City sponsored by Venice Area Beautification Inc. working in cooperation with the Parks Advisory Board. Monty Andrews has provided much leadership and personal commitment and work to this uniquely beautiful part of Venice.
The Arboretum, lovely at any time, is particularly appealing now, bedecked with Holiday Lights, including a beautiful Cedar tree, complementing the new tree in Centennial Park.

Latest Venice, Florida City News--FAA Meeting and Jet Center News
FAA Meeting, December 11,2009
City Manager Isaac Turner, staff and our airport planning consultants, DY, met in Orlando with FAA program head Bart Vernace and key staff members. As always, the meeting was cordial and professional.
DY and Mr. Turner presented the City's wish for FAA approval of the airport as a "B." FAA responses clearly favored continuing the FAA position the airport is a "C," but the FAA has promised a formal response within 30 days.

Want an Automatic Dog Washer?--Inquire at Venice Elementary School
A Venice Elementary Student, ( I did not ask for permission from parents and so am not publishing his name, however worthy), produced a VES Science Fair Exhibit, demonstrating the effectiveness of his invention.
After family discussions about the difficulty of dog-washing-as he said, "its too messy inside, and outside the dog will usually run away" , he researched automated dog-washing machines on the Internet and found one for only $33,000.
