Citizen Bob Dennis Comments on Airport Charette
Bob Dennis wrote the following to the consultants who directed the charette. His views were similar to those of Peg Tomanio.

Thank you for the opportunity to participate in the charrette workshop.

I think there were many there for their own vested interest, i.e. The Boone Law firm, developers, etc.and I was disappointed that the turnout of city residents was not better. Having it scheduled for the entire Saturday 10-5pm certainly was a deterrent for most people.

Peg Tomanio finds problems in Charette report
FYI..............

On August 6, 2007 I sent a rather long letter to Mr. Black outlining my thoughts (good and bad) concerning the weekend charrette. I believe you have a copy of that letter. His only comment to date relative to the charrette was that he had asked my comments be included in the airport master plan file.

After reviewing the charrette public comments on the City's website, I have a few additional thoughts about the results as presented by the consultants.

Inside Venice to Feature Election Coverage-Follow Citizen Comments and Candidate Views
As of today, I have taken leave from my duties as a public policy columnist for the Venice Gondolier Sun because I am seriously considering running in November in the city council/mayoral election. I expect to make a formal announcement after Labor Day if I decide to run.

Friends used to reading the Gondo column will find that I will be keeping up with events and ideas on this website.

I also plan to feature citizen views on Venice, what we want to preserve, what we

Zavodnyik Article Replies
Inside Venice has received several replies to the statement by Ernie Zavodnyik about his candidacy. None has been printed for several reasons, email address failure, inability to confirm identity of sender, length, content , etc.

Because the election brings out partisan comments from all parties, only letters which advance a civic discussion will be used. Candidates are welcome to state their positions on issues.

Ernie Zavodnyik States His Positions in Council Race
SAVE OUR VENICE NOW
My candidacy gives Venice voters a vehicle for significant change in our local government. Venice is not served well by actions and policies that continually emphasize development and growth. I will strive to protect and enhance Venice’s charm and ambience.
I hear voter’s concerns as expressed at City Council meetings and I read about them in our newspapers. The constant refrain or thread is to preserve what we have as a community. They like the small town char

Bob Vedder and Bob Mudge on same wavelength as Inside Venice re growth issues
In Wednesday's Gondolier I found the publisher, Bob Vedder and quite probably the editor, Bob Mudge (the publisher also influences editorials on virtually every paper), shared attitudes with this writer.
I think their comments are important because they suggest there is widespread support for rethinking our city's planning and priorities. Some would like to say only a small group of zealots are involved in a "no growth" campaign. The issue that this distorts is that some growth is good,

Herald Trib Editorial Suggests Rethinking on Runway Length
Check the numbers
The long and the short of airport safety

Suddenly, a new idea has sprouted wings: Make the two runways at the Venice Municipal Airport shorter so they won't be suitable for jet traffic.

Airport Advisory Board member Jim Leis says he will ask the board to consider that idea. The board, which meets today, should study the proposal to determine whether it's the best way to ensure safe use of the airport, protect the environment and all

Council--Lessons Missed in Kindergarten?
Venice spent almost $1,000 of the taxpayers’ money because Mayor Fred Hammett asked City Attorney Bob Anderson to review the legality of the county commissioners’ actions to promote the March referendum.

Specifically, the mayor expressed annoyance that the county spent funds expressing its views on the value of the referendum.

The mayor asked council to continue Anderson’s legal research at a meeting on the day the referendum was passing overwhelmingly. Ci

Citizen Meeting with Planning Director Slaughter leads to new information
Randall Greene has written "Inside Venice" about the "Villages" referred to in my article in the Venice Gondolier-Sun and on this website. Randall was the first person, to my knowledge, to pick up the weaknesses in the comprehensive plan now awaiting State action. (Randall writes that Sue Lang first began examining the plan and he followed up also. Not surprising, Sue is a vigorous researcher.)
He reports, below, that Tom Slaughter, City Planning and Zoning Director, has recounted a nu
